The continuous expansion of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and drones in agricultural and commercial applications has significantly increased the demand for high precision, lightweight gimbals and pointing systems.
Payloads differ depending on the sensing technology, objectives and applications of the aerial system. Direct drive gimbal solutions provide significant precision and reliability advantage over conventional belt and pulley platforms for communication, sensing and imaging applications that require highly dynamic and precise motion control. Most direct drive solutions available on the market are not capable of meeting the weight, form factor and energy efficiency requirements demanded in UAV applications.
The low profile Omni and Agility (zero cogging) series motors from Celera Motion are designed to reduce power consumption. They can also be optimized to provide a large through hole while minimizing weight by setting up the motor performance to the specific payload requirements. For gimbal axes that require limited angle motion, additional optimization may be achieved with an Infinity Series arc segment motor or Juke Series voice coil motor.
The Optira Series miniature encoder provides high accuracy in a very small package to complete the system. It can be combined with a limited angle segment or full rotary grating. Celera Motion’s solutions have allowed many top UAV and drone OEMs to realize their next-generation communication, scanning and imaging requirements. While some customers prefer to incorporate Celera Motion’s components into their gimbal designs, others collaborate with the Celera Motion’s mechatronics team to design and provide a fully tested and assembled gimbal sub-system.
