Watch as policeman dramatically intercepts drone carrying drugs and mobile phones into Pentonville Prison

Prison CCTV cameras captured the dramatic moment a plain clothes detective brings down a drone trying to smuggle drugs into Pentoville Prison.

The detective was in an undercover car parked outside the Victorian jail’s walls when he spotted the drone hover overhead with a piece of string dangling down.

The officer then yanked it bringing the drone crashing to the floor.

The officers had been investigating another drone crash at the north London prison when the drone controlled by Charlie Adifiyi, 21, came into view.

The officers were part of ‘Operation Airborne’ – intended to combat the use of drones at Pentonville.

They were tipped off by prison staff who spotted the drone on CCTV flying towards the prison.

Today pharmacology student Adifiyi was jailed for three years after pleading guilty to trying to smuggle the drugs to his brother who was serving time for drug offences.

Prisons Minister Sam Gyimah, added: “I am determined to stem the flow of drugs into our prisons, and I want to pay tribute to the staff at HMP Pentonville and the police for preventing this haul from entering the prison system and undermining the stability and order at the jail.

“This conviction should send a strong message to others who may attempt to do the same; we will find you and put you behind bars.”

Inspector Steve Murfin, from Neighbourhoods Policing in Islington, said: “This drone was found to be carrying a substantial amount of cannabis and phones and due to the vigilance of officers it was prevented from entering the prison.

“We work closely with the prison service to gather intelligence in order to carry out proactive operations to arrest and prosecute those who commit this crime.”

Adifiyi pleaded guilty to Section 40A Prisons Act 1952 ‘cannabis’, Section 40B Prisons Act 1952 ‘phones’ and throwing an article into prison contrary to Section 40CB Prisons Act 1952 ‘psychoactive substance’.

He was also sentenced to one count of possession with intent to supply psychoactive substance.
